One Night Stand Review : A Stale Plot Served With A Twist

Way back in 1987, Michael Douglas and Glenn Close had starred in a film titled Fatal Attraction, a movie about a one-night stand that has lethal consequences when one develops an unhealthy obsession for the other.

Cut to 2016- the same formula (albeit with a twist) is being peddled to the audience in One Night Stand, a film by Jasmine D'Souza and starring Sunny Leone,Tanuj Virwani and Nyra Banerjee.

Urvil (Tanuj) is a happily married event manager, who doesn't mind a fling or two when he is out on company work. While in Phuket for work, he runs into the mysterious Celina (Sunny Leone) and the two end up having a sinful romp.

However, when Urvil returns back to his loving wife Simran (Nyra Banerjee), he discovers that he has not gotten over Celina and tries his best to locate her. Urvil finally runs into her at an event, but when Celina (whose real name is Amber, we discover) rebuffs his advances, Urvil snaps and starts stalking her, without any regard to the effect of his actions on his professional and personal life.

Tanuj will pleasantly surprise you with his act and the way his character unravels gradually and turns from a happy-go-lucky Casanova to a borderline alcoholic stalker, is something that has been handled quite well. Sunny is undeniably hot but she still needs to work on her dialogue delivery and her accent (which is really irrelevant if you are buying a ticket to just feast your eyes on the sultry siren). Nyra Banerjee is the weakest link in the film and her 'cute and loving wife' act comes across as a bit too forced. Ninad Kamat, who plays Urvil's work buddy, shines in his scenes.

As for the plot, with the exception of a couple of minor twists, One Night Stand evokes a strong sense of déjà vu… the film has borrowed not only from Fatal Attraction, but also desi flicks like Darr and Anjaam. Thankfully, the film is not too long and the treatment is not too bad barring a few hiccups (like the moral science lecture delivered by Leone at the end).

Another thing worth liking about the film is that it has a very real climax and not something like the films mentioned above had. However, the film could have been handled with more finesse and the director could have certainly scored some brownie points by avoiding certain scenes (like the one where a smug Urvil advises his protégé to never hire a good-looking woman as a secretary as it can complicate things). Ohh! and before we forget, the film is not full of steamy sex scenes, if that is what the trailer seems to imply.

Having said that, despite the lack of originality and Leone's accent, One Night Stand is a half-decent watch.
